KATAI: “I live alone on top of a mountain & my only friend is a Black Bear. I’d make the bear special dinners & in return, the bear would teach me its technique. This bear is slick… It inspired me so deeply that no matter where I am, the bear is always with me. Before the Bear, I am inspired by trees…trees go deep. Those two are just certain aspects to the bigger picture, so to put it simply – existence is inspiring me… It’s endless.”

WHAT ARE YOUR MEDIUMS OF CHOICE AS AN ARTIST?
As an artist, I create my own medium – something similar to a black hole that allows you to enter into extra dimensions.

WHY DO YOU LIVE AND MAKE WORK IN DETROIT?
I’ve been to all the big cities in the country & it has helped me realize how relaxing & beautifully dangerous Detroit is. I gotta hold it down during this period of intense transformation. I am Detroit.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT DETROIT? WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO?
I prefer cruising the back streets late at night & vibing out making visual pieces. There are a few secret spots I enjoy viewing the sunrise at & Belle Isle used to be jamming, but since the big government took over its not as lit.

WHAT ARE CHALLENGES AS AN ARTIST IN DETROIT?
“It gets so cold in the D.”

DESCRIBE WHAT YOU IMAGINE DETROIT TO BE IN 10 YEARS.
In ten years… I don’t want to think about it but I hope everyone is growing gardens, planting trees & living more efficiently.
