Pedro Cruz y sus colegas de la Northeastern University crearon un “dendrográfico” que retrata a los Estados Unidos como un organismo vivo que destaca su diversidad. El dendrográfico representa el crecimiento orgánico de los Estados Unidos. Cada ola de inmigración que ha llegado a nuestras costas durante décadas nos ha fortalecido. Cada anillo representa una década de crecimiento versus un año en árboles regulares. El árbol crece más en direcciones de donde proviene la inmigración.
Al crear el dendrográfico, el profesor Cruz y su equipo querían ilustrar nuestra conexión con la naturaleza. Cada ola de inmigración que ha llegado a nuestras costas durante décadas nos ha fortalecido. El subproducto es una poderosa secoya. Cada anillo representa una década de crecimiento versus un año en árboles regulares. Las celdas que forman los anillos representan 100 inmigrantes. Un algoritmo dispersa las celdas en un patrón concéntrico creando un mosaico colorido que se basa en los orígenes de los inmigrantes. La codificación de colores representa el origen de los inmigrantes y el posicionamiento es relativo a las regiones geográficas en las que se asentaron. La visualización también está posicionada para reflejar las regiones geográficas de los Estados Unidos. Por ejemplo, vemos un fuerte flujo de inmigrantes asiáticos que se instalan en Occidente, latinoamericanos en el sur y inmigrantes europeos en el este.
THE UNITED STATES IS A MIGHTY REDWOOD
When creating the dendrographic, Prof Cruz and team wanted to illustrate our connection to nature. Each wave of immigration that has come to our shores over the decades has strengthened us. The byproduct is a mighty redwood. Each ring represents a decade of growth versus a year in regular trees. The cells that make up the rings represent 100 immigrants. An algorithm disperses the cells in a concentric pattern creating a colorful mosaic that is based on the origins of the immigrants. The color coding represents the origin of the immigrants and the positioning is relative to the geographic regions in which they settled. The visualization is also positioned to reflect the geographic regions of the United States. For example, we see a heavy flow of Asian immigrants settling to the West, Latin Americans settling in the South and European immigrants settling along the East.

Pedro Cruz and his colleagues from Northeastern University created a “dendrographic” that portrays the United States as a living organism that highlights its diversity. This visualization has won two awards at the 2018 Kantar Information is Beautiful Awards. It won gold in the People, Language & Identity category, and the main prize for the most beautiful visualization.
The dendrographic depicts the organic growth of the United States. Each wave of immigration that has come to our shores over the decades has strengthened us.
