Acoustic Botany: Genetically Engineered Sound Garden

The debate around Genetic Engineering is currently centered around vital issues such as food, healthcare and the environment. However, we have been shaping nature for thousands of years, not only to suit our needs, but our most irrational desires. Beautiful flowers, mind altering weeds and crabs shaped like human faces all thrive on these desires, giving them an evolutionary advantage. By presenting a fantastical acoustic garden, a controlled ecosystem of entertainment, I aim to explore our cultural and aesthetic relationship to nature, and to question its future in the age of Synthetic Biology.

El debate en torno a la ingeniería genética está actualmente centrada en torno a cuestiones vitales como la alimentación, la salud y el medio ambiente. Sin embargo, hemos estado dando forma a la naturaleza durante miles de años, no sólo para satisfacer nuestras necesidades, pero nuestros deseos más irracionales. Hermosas flores, hierbas malas que alteran la mente  y cangrejos en forma de rostros humanos todos prosperan en estos deseos, dándoles una ventaja evolutiva. Con la presentación de un fantástico jardín acústico, que es un ecosistema controlado para entretenimiento, mi objetivo es explorar nuestra relación cultural y estética con la naturaleza, y cuestionar su futuro en la era de la biología sintética.
